Better Management of Migrants’ Remittance: Needs Assessment Workshop for Bank Officials

A workshop entitled, Better Management of Migrants’ Remittance: Needs Assessment Workshop for Bank Officials was held on 05 May, 2007 at BRAC Centre Inn, Dhaka. The workshop was organised by the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) under the project Capacity Building for Ensuring Safe Labour Migration (CABSLM), supported by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF).

The idea of the workshop was to make the grass roots level bank officials aware of the importance of customer friendly service needed for the migrant workers or remitters. The workshop also exchanged views about problems faced by the bank officials in dealing with remittance and suggestions were noted.

Sixteen bank officials were invited from the four upazilas of the project areas and fourteen of them were present. The four project coordinators of the partner NGOs of CABSLAM project also attended the workshop.

Ms. Shaheen Anam, Executive Director, MJF spoke as the Special Guest in the inaugural session of the programme while Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui, Project Advisor CABSLAM project presided over the workshop and was also one of the resource persons. Mr. Andrew T. Hook of the Remittance and Payments Partnership (RPP) project presented a paper on ‘New Actors and Methods’ of remittances. Mr. Richard Moss, Team Leader of the RPP project also gave speech. The members of the sub-committee that monitors the Capacity Building of Bank Officials’ component of this project were present as resource persons.

Lectures, discussions, group work and case studies were carried out in the workshop. At the end, Dr. C R Abrar, Coordinator, RMMRU read out and discussed the comments that were made in the Evaluation forms of the participants.

The participants thanked RMMRU for organising the workshop and suggested RMMRU to arrange this type of workshops on regular basis.
